Verifying Your Identity Before Signing

What to expect when a contract requires a government ID and selfie check before your signature can be accepted.

Why am I being asked to verify my identity?

The sender has required an identity check for this contract. You need to complete it before your signature can be accepted. This check is separate from the one-time passcode (OTP) used to open the signing flow.

The check is handled by Didit. You will be asked to take a photo of a government-issued ID and a selfie.

Complete the check

  1. Open the identity-verification link in the email about the contract. Use the link sent to you; it is intended for your verification session.
  2. Follow the instructions on the Didit page. Have your ID ready and take the photos when prompted.
  3. When you finish, return to the contract signing page. If the check is still being reviewed, wait for the result email before continuing.
  4. After approval, reopen the signing link and complete any remaining signing steps.

Use a clear, well-lit photo and make sure your ID has not expired. If the page asks you to retake a photo, follow its instructions and submit it again.

Check your verification status

  • In progress: Return to the open verification page and finish the steps. If you closed it, reopen the verification link from the email. If the link no longer works, contact the sender of the contract.
  • In review: Didit is reviewing your submission. You will receive an email when the review is complete.
  • Verified: Return to the contract and finish signing.
  • Could not verify: Check the email for the reason and retry link. Use a clear photo, good lighting, and a valid ID. If you do not have a retry link or the check keeps failing, contact the sender of the contract.

Questions about your document

Didit processes the ID check. DottSign does not store the ID image; it keeps the verification result and limited status details. For questions about why the check is required for this contract, contact the sender.

The contract owner may be able to waive the check for an individual signer. A waiver is recorded on the contract’s certificate, and only the owner can make that decision.
