What the DottSign MCP server does
DottSign has an MCP server (Model Context Protocol), the open standard AI apps use to talk to other tools. Once connected, an assistant such as Claude, Cursor or VS Code can work with your contracts right from the chat: find a contract, read its clauses, check who still has to sign, list upcoming obligations, and, if you allow it, draft a new contract or send one for signature.
Connecting AI apps is available on Starter, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans.
The server URL is:
https://mcp.dottsign.com/mcp
You'll also find it, with a copy button, in Profile → Integrations → Connected AI apps.
Connecting your app
Every app works the same way: you give it the URL, it opens a DottSign screen, and you approve access there. You never paste a password or API key into the AI app.
Claude (claude.ai or Claude Desktop)
- Open Settings → Connectors
- Choose Add custom connector and name it DottSign
- Paste the server URL and click Add
- Click Connect, then approve access on the DottSign screen that opens
Claude Code
-
Run this command in your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http dottsign https://mcp.dottsign.com/mcp -
Start Claude Code, type
/mcp, choose dottsign and authenticate, then approve access on the DottSign screen that opens
Cursor
-
In DottSign, go to Profile → Integrations, open the Cursor tab and click Add to Cursor. Or add this to
~/.cursor/mcp.json:{ "mcpServers": { "dottsign": { "url": "https://mcp.dottsign.com/mcp" } } } -
In Cursor Settings → MCP, click Login next to dottsign and approve access
VS Code
- In DottSign, go to Profile → Integrations, open the VS Code tab and click Add to VS Code. Or run MCP: Add Server → HTTP and paste the server URL
- Start the dottsign server from the MCP view and approve access
Other apps
Add a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) with the server URL. Most apps accept the same JSON shown for Cursor. When the app asks you to sign in, approve access on the DottSign screen.
Choosing what the app can do
The DottSign approval screen lists each permission with a checkbox. You decide, and you can grant less than the app asked for.
| Permission | What it allows |
|---|---|
| View your workspace (always on) | Search and read your contracts and their text, signers, obligations, renewal history, notifications and plan usage |
| Create contracts | Add new contracts it drafts with you, laid out as a PDF in your workspace. Each one counts toward your monthly contract limit |
| Edit contracts and obligations | Rename, tag and change the expiry date or status of contracts you own, manage their obligations, and mark notifications read |
| Send contracts for signature | Send contracts you own to their signers. Each signer gets an email from DottSign |
The app acts as you: it sees exactly the contracts you can see in DottSign and follows the same rules (for example, signed contracts stay locked). Most AI apps ask you to confirm each change before it happens.
What an AI app can never do: delete a contract or sign anything on your behalf.
A contract created by an AI app starts as a draft. Before it can be sent, open it in DottSign and place the signers' signature fields.
Changing permissions
Permissions are fixed when you connect. To change them, disconnect the app (see below), then connect it again and tick different boxes.
Seeing and disconnecting connected apps
- Go to Profile → Integrations
- Under Connected AI apps, each app shows its permissions and when it was last used
- Click Disconnect next to the app and confirm
The app loses access immediately. You can also do this from the mobile app under Profile → Connected AI apps.
Connected apps are also disconnected automatically when you reset your password or delete your account.
Troubleshooting
"Available on paid plans" Your account is on the Free plan. Upgrade to Starter or above from Settings → Billing, then connect again. If you downgrade later, connected apps stop working right away.
"This link can't be used" The request from your AI app was incomplete or expired. Go back to the app and start the connection again.
The app says it doesn't have permission You didn't tick that permission when connecting. Disconnect the app and connect it again with the permission you need.
Wrong DottSign account On the approval screen, click Not you? Use a different account and sign in with the right one.
